What’s on the agenda today?
Hey {{First Name| there}},
15 years. $4.6 trillion. The most successful CEO transition in tech history. And somewhere in Apple's HR system, there is an exit interview that tells the real story.
Which got us thinking …how good is yours?

1️⃣ What a Good Exit Actually Looks Like
Tim Cook stepped down as Apple CEO after 15 years, handing over to hardware engineering chief John Ternus. The transition was announced five months in advance. No drama. No disruption. iPhone 18 launch still on track.
That is the gold standard:
✅ Planned and announced well in advance
✅ Successor identified and prepared internally
✅ Outgoing leader staying on as executive chairman
Most exits look nothing like this. Most exits are a Friday afternoon message and a Monday morning scramble.
2️⃣ Why Exit Interviews Are Still Broken
Governing magazine puts it plainly: most organisations conduct exit interviews, file them away, and do nothing with them.
The problems:
😶 Employees do not tell the truth — fear of burning bridges produces safe, sanitised answers
📁 Data is not aggregated — patterns across teams and managers are never spotted
⏱️ Timing is wrong — asking on the last day produces the least honest answers
The fix: reach out three to six months post-exit. The pressure to be polite is gone. The answers are worth far more.

2 minutes. Your URL. A customer profile worth using.
Most founders can describe their product. They can't describe their customer. Not in a way that actually changes how they sell.
HubSpot for Startups built a free tool to fix that. Paste in your URL, answer a few quick questions, and it generates a structured profile of your best-fit customer. Firmographics, buying triggers, the works.
Takes 2 minutes. No spreadsheet required.
3️⃣ The New Offboarding Question Nobody Is Asking
Forbes asks it directly: "Your employee just resigned. Who inherits their AI?"
Employees are building AI agents that review contracts, prepare briefings, and automate decisions. Those employees leave on Friday. Their AI does not.
By Monday, someone needs to know:
🤖 Who owns the AI agents this person built?
📋 What processes are they embedded in?
🔐 Who can update, inherit, or retire them?
And a recent Apple employee offboarding lawsuit makes the stakes clear — digital access and data continuity are now legal risks, not just operational ones.

4️⃣ What HR Should Do
Tim Cook got five months. Most departures get five minutes. Use them well.
📅 Follow up post-exit — reach out 3 to 6 months later for honest answers, not last-day pleasantries
📊Analyses patterns— one person saying their manager was the problem is a complaint. Ten saying it is a trend
🔄 Act on what you find — an exit interview that changes nothing is worse than no interview at all
🤖 Ask who inherits their AI — document every agent, tool, and automation an employee built before they walk out
🔐 Revoking credentials is not enough — audit what AI automations remain active after someone leaves
🏗️ Start offboarding before the resignation — document processes from day one so no single person holds all the institutional knowledge
